Meme time! Since I haven't been updating my journal with these in awhile, it's about time.

[livejournal.com profile] elle_white gave me five questions. If you comment on this entry, I'll ask you a few questions. For now, here's my answers:

1.) What was the first anime you ever saw, and how do you think it stands up today?

My brother swears on his life that it was Dragon Ball Z, and he was the one that showed me Sailor Moon and forced me to watch it instead of bugging him during his favorite show. LIES.

Um. Anyways, enough of my personal life. On to Sailor Moon! It was my first *official* anime; I recognized it as anime, something I haven't been familiar with before, and I was immediately curious about it. I still think it holds up today. Obviously it falls short of the new shiny stuff, but its influence on anime fans can't be denied, and I'm not sure if any other anime holds that same sentimentality Sailor Moon tends to give its fans.

And as a side note, it really annoys me when anime fans who claim to be feminist bash on Sailor Moon and Usagi, or drawing unfair comparisons to other shows with female leads. I get that it isn't perfect, considering how often Tuxedo Mask had to come and help Sailor Moon gather the courage to fight off her enemies, but...well, speaking as someone who does see herself as a feminist, the show really meant a lot to nine-year-old me, and I hate it when other people dismiss its influence on girls and young women and never seem to do the same with other shows that dismiss female characters altogether. That, and even if you dislike the anime, the manga series itself is miles better in its own place, and I wish haters would take the time to read the manga first before dismissing Sailor Moon entirely.

2.) What would like to do as a profession?

I would like to do something with an English degee, but that plan is on the back burner, for now. The economy is getting better, but it's a slow progress, and I can't wait on my field to imrpove forever. Right now I'm wondering if I should seek a career working with animals instead. It's still a work in process. I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing right now.

3.) Are there any recently released TV shows that have caught your interest?

Not really. I don't watch a show unless someone recommends it, or I accidentally discover it years after the release. I tried to get into Community, but I lost interest quickly. How I Met Your Mother is another, but that came out in 2005, I think, so it doesn't really count anymore.

4.) Which do you prefer, cats or dogs?

I love both, but if I had to pick, it's definitely cats. I like dogs, but I connect easier with cats, and I can handle them well enough.

5.) Who are some of your favourite writers?

Jeanette Winterson is a ridiculously good writer. Her work definitely shined with Written On The Body; literally every page has something touching to share.

Amy Tan is also one of my favorites; I love how she focuses on mother/daughter (and sister) relationships and brings something genuine to her stories. Since a lot of narratives focus on Daddy and Brother Issues, it's a breath of fresh air to read her books.

I went through a brief Stephen King phase when I was younger. It wore off, but I still like his books, such as his short stories and other lesser known books such as "The Eye of the Dragon."

Then [livejournal.com profile] analeisa was kind enough to provide me fandoms for this meme. <3

Leave a comment on this post and I will pick three of your fandoms. Then you get to answer the following questions:

1. The first character I first fell in love with:
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:
4. The character I love that everyone else hates:
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer:
6. The character I would shag anytime:
7. The character I'd want to be like:
8. The character I'd slap:
9. A pairing that I love:
10. A pairing that I despise:
11. Favorite character:
12. My five favorite characters:
13. My five least favorite characters:
14. Which character I am most like:
15. My deep, dark fandom secret:

AVATAR
1. The first character I first fell in love with: Katara, actually. While she isn't my favorite character on the show, I agree that she's one of the most developed female characters I've come across in a animated show.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Azula. At the end, I just ended up feeling sorry for her more than anything. I still wouldn't trust her, but I hope she got better and found peace in her life. Hopefully Avatar Korra's series will reveal something about her.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: I'm not sure. The fandom seems torn on Suki. People either really love her or really hate her. I'm in between. I like her, but I never connected to her personally, not the way I did with the other ladies on the show.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Mai! Fuck the haters, she's awesome.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: I don't think I've had this problem with the show. Once I love a character, it usually sticks.
6. The character I would shag anytime: I'm not sure if I would ~shag~ anyone, since i'm the most sexually repressed individual (who occasionally enjoys a good smut fic) you'd ever meet. Um, maybe Zuko? He's nice looking, scar and all.
7. The character I'd want to be like: Aang.
8. The character I'd slap: Oh Jet, honey, I like you, but terrorism isn't awesome. I'd love to slap some sense into that thick noggin of yours.
9. A pairing that I love: Zuko/Mai!
10. A pairing that I despise: Anything with incest, such as Zuko/Azula or Sokka/Katara. WHAT THE HELL, FANDOM, NO.
11. Favorite character: Zuko, followed closely by Sokka.
12. My five favorite characters: Zuko, Sokka, Mai, Azula, Aang.
13. My five least favorite characters: I don't think I dislike that many characters on the show. I know Ozai is one of them. Fuck Ozai.
14. Which character I am most like: Zuko. I'm indecisive and moody like him.
15. My deep, dark fandom secret: When I first watched the show, I briefly flirted with Zuko/Katara as my main ship. I don't ship it anymore, but I get why some people enjoy it, although I really wish fandom would faithfully tell a good Zuko/Katara story that doesn't demonize Aang and Mai, or change either of their personalities.

SAILOR MOON
1. The first character I first fell in love with: Usagi!
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Setsuna. I mean, I always wanted to see a Sailor Pluto in the show, but I didn't think I would love her as much as I do now.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Michiru? That is, I know fandom at large loves Haruka/Michiru, and I can really just take or leave them. They're cute together, but neither of them do much for me. Haruka is interesting enough to escape from this radar, though. Sorry, Michiru. I still kind of like you. :(
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know what fandom hates. Mamoru/Usagi fans--which are IN HUGE NUMBERS--seem to hate Seiya, which I'm never going to understand.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: N/A.
6. The character I would shag anytime: N/A.
7. The character I'd want to be like: Rei! Both versions are fabulous.
8. The character I'd slap: Prince Demando, no, you cannot have Usagi. Go home.
9. A pairing that I love: Mamoru/Usagi, followed closely by Nephrite/Naru!
10. A pairing that I despise: Naru/Umino. I HATE THIS SO MUCH. It was so lazily written. I will never respect it or enjoy it.
11. Favorite character: Usagi, haters be damned.
12. My five favorite characters: Usagi, Rei, Setsuna, Makoto, Hotaru.
13. My five least favorite characters: Ehhhh. Still not sure if I HATE any of them, but here we go: Chibiusa, Michiru, Haruka, Demando, Emerald. Eek, that was kind of painful. D:
14. Which character I am most like: Ha ha ha. Probably Hotaru. I WAS THE STRANGE ONE IN SCHOOL, TOO.
15. My deep, dark fandom secret: N/A.

TEEN TITANS
1. The first character I first fell in love with: Terra! Starfire would've owned this spot, but I never really stuck with Teen Titans until season two came in. I saw Terra's introductory episode, and I was hooked from then on.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Raven. It had nothing to do with her personally. Her fans and their viciousness towards Terra just turned me off in general.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: Robin. Then again, I'll never understand why fans adore Robins in general and hold them above all of the other characters.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Lightning! And Gizmo! And all of the other minor characters that nobody talks about!
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer: N/A.
6. The character I would shag anytime: N/A.
7. The character I'd want to be like: I could only hope to be as cool as Cyborg someday. I don't think anyone can be as cool as Cyborg, though.
8. The character I'd slap: Robin when he was rough with Starfire in an episode from season three. WHAT THE HELL, BRO, DON'T GRIP ON HER ARM LIKE THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE MAD. (And yes, I get why that was written in, and I know he was basically going crazy, but he was still out-of-line.) Or, you know, Robin in general, because sometimes I just don't like him.
9. A pairing that I love: Beast Boy/Terra.
10. A pairing that I despise: Beast Boy/Raven, because the fans completely turned me off from it. You can argue at me until your face turns blue about why they're awesome, but it won't work.
11. Favorite character: Starfire! No, wait. Terra! No, wait. BOTH.
12. My five favorite characters: Starfire, Terra, Cyborg, Lightning, Gizmo.
13. My five least favorite characters: N/A.
14. Which character I am most like: Uhh, nobody I know.
15. My deep, dark fandom secret: Much like Zuko/Katara, I used to be interested in Beast Boy/Raven. I think I'm doomed to forever despise an extremely popular ship due to ridiculous fandoms and their embarrassing behavior.

And finally, I would love to get some prompts for this one, if you'd be so kind.

Give me a pairing and I will:
1. Tell you who I think tops
2. Who has the prettiest hair
3. What their children will be named
4. Which one would be the loudest during sex
5. My ideal scenario for them

I have to say, I enjoy the Sailor Moon anime a lot more than the manga because Naoko Takeuchi's style does absolutely nothing for me. I get that her style's primarily a shoujo style but she can't draw action... at all. I like the work in her artbooks because her illustrations are a lot like fashion spreads, which she's good at drawing.

I think the anime fixes a lot of the manga's pacing issues too, not that it didn't bring its own problems but I admit I can overlook them more than the manga due to bias. And the dub... I LOVE IT. I love that it's a weird product of its time with the slang, but the clothes the characters wore were very 80's haha.

Actually I hear that the live action series is the best version so maybe I should check that out sometime.

HMMMM. I'd say Thane/Tisha due to my mass effect obsession, but Thane doesn't have hair, and I doubt they can have kids XD

SOOOOO UHHHHH. Alistair/Riz :P

lol, yeah. Lacking hair does affect which pairing to shoot. And I'm still wondering how drell/human sex even works without giggling about HALLUCINATIONS. xD;

I WILL GLADLY DO ALISTAIR/RIZ.

1. Well, canon-wise, Alistair tops, and it makes sense since he's a human and she's an elf. The differences are subtle, but they're there, so they're mindful about it. (Although I can see Riz being the sort of bottom that SECRETLY CONTROLS everything that happens, being the persuasive/cunning person she's always been. Alistair has no idea and remains blissfully ignorant for awhile. Poor sap.)
2. Alistair. Wait, no. Riz! Riz has red hair. Wait, no, Alistair is obsessed with his hair, of course it's the prettiest. I DON'T KNOW. Girls, you're both pretty. (They're equally pretty for different reasons: Alistair's got plain ol' blonde hair but he keeps it nice and cut, whereas Riz's hair color looks nice but her hair might be jagged since she cuts hers with her dagger and doesn't really care how it comes out. WHICH HORRIFIES ALISTAIR, and he eventually convinces her to let him do it.)
3. I can see them being the sort of sentimental parents that would name their kids after people they've loved and lost in their lives. If they had a son, Alistair and Riz would both agree to name him after Duncan. If they had a girl, Alistair would be the first to suggest Riz's mother's name, Adria. Riz would be hesitant at first, but ultimately agree to do so.
4. ALISTAIR, ALWAYS, since I always picture him as the vocal one anyway. Riz prefers to physically express herself, if you know what I mean. |3
5. Since I'm bitter about the lack of Warden Alistair's appearance in Awakening, this is my ideal situation for them: in the middle of Riz getting the Keep in order and trying to figure out what the talking darkspawn are up to, Alistair arrives and is all COMMANDER, MY DEAR, I AM HOME NOW, AND I AM LOOKING VERY HANDSOME TODAY. And Riz is all CANCEL MY APPOINTMENTS TODAY, I HAVE BUSINESS TO ATTEND TO WITH THE SENIOR WARDEN. Then they retire to her (well, their) quarters and spend a day and a half in bed. Sometimes they sex, sometimes they just talk, sometimes Riz surprises Alistair with THE FINEST CHEESE FROM AMARATHINE. Who knows?

... Wow, I think a lot about Alistair/Riz but never actually write them. DOES IT SHOW?

Also, I'm an idiot, because I didn't ask if you wanted to participate in any of the memes.

Sailor Moon was second anime. Samurai Pizza Cats was my first. :D But I love it so much and it had a huge impact on me as a kid. When I finally got to read the manga, I realized it was far better than the anime series. But the anime will always be special to because it was a major part of my childhood.

For the pairing meme, Mai/Zuko!
