I'm having that awkward moment when you know you're overemotional and hormonal when a story you're writing at 3AM is leaving a lump in your throat, even though it's a crap story. Oh and work is at 10:30AM and I'm not tired. HOORAY except not really. What is your life, Sam?

Um, on another matter entirely: I'm not sure what's going on with Livejournal, but in case it decides to implode with the way it's been acting lately, I'm letting you guys know that I have a Tumblr and a Dreamwidth account. (I've also got an Insanejournal and Plurk accounts lying around someplace. Same screen name for all of them, btw.) Just in case you guys wanted a friendly reminder! I doubt anything bad's going to happen, but I figure the heads-up wouldn't hurt.

Straight Male Gamer told to get over it by Bioware.

Long story short: Straight Male Gamer complains about the bisexual options in Dragon Age 2. Bioware responds with this:

The romances in the game are not for “the straight male gamer”. They’re for everyone. We have a lot of fans, many of whom are neither straight nor male, and they deserve no less attention.

[...] The very best we can do is give everyone a little bit of choice, and that’s what we tried here. And the person who says that the only way to please them is to restrict options for others is, if you ask me, the one who deserves it least. And that’s my opinion, expressed as politely as possible.

Oh, Bioware. I knew there was a reason why I loved playing your games so much, and you just gave me another reason to adore you guys.

And since I'm so nice, I'm putting this meme behind a cut so it won't overload your friends list. )

Well! That was fun. Now unfortunately I have a job. Woe.

(Btw: I've purchased and started playing Dragon Age: Awakening. Without spoiling anything, Anders in DA2 >>>> Anders in Awakening. I don't even know who this impostor is.)

Edit: Derp. Go fig I would forget to put the code for this meme in this entry. Here it is.

You ever have one of those nights where you can't sleep, it's five in the morning, you have the odd inspiration to write something except it's all stupid fanfiction? Then you discover that you're not comfortable writing fanfiction so instead you try to focus on original characters that aren't giving you the inspiration you need?

So you're just sitting on your bed in front of your notebook or computer and staring awkwardly at it and waiting for a dumb idea to come out of nowhere. It never comes. You should be going to sleep but, again, you're not tired and you're bored and you've lost control over your life.

This happens to me a lot lately. I hate these nights. Maybe I should read a book.

My journal's been too depressing lately. Here, a meme I stole from tumblr!

Comment with a fandom and I'll give you:

- 3 favorite relationships
- 3 favorite characters
- 3 favorite moments
- 3 reasons I like/love that fandom

... And just for kicks, if you're interested, since I've been on a music kick lately.

Give me a character/relationship/fandom and I'll name at least one song that reminds me of them.

You should know my fandoms by now. If not, feel free to check out my icons or the listing here for a better idea. (I'm aware that my listing gives away ships, but I'll try and sum up my main three for this meme.)

Real life business: Dragon Age 2 is still a project. Been meaning to pick up my transcript from college but haven't gotten around to it yet. Finally got out of the house and went shopping at the mall today and picked up a lot of cute stuff - and I had a Nostalgia Bomb drop on me when I discovered my favorite Backstreet Boys CD on sale at FYE for $5. It's the same one I played on repeat when I was twelve or thirteen. NO REGRETS!
samatethecookie: holy crap, I have this hairstyle now (my pain and all the trouble caused)
Dragon Age 2 is fun! Is it the first one? No, but it measures up pretty well as a stand alone game. (Although I will admit that the game is definitely set up for those who played the first one plus Awakening. I'm afraid of Awakening spoilers because I've yet to buy and play through it yet so I'm trudging through it cautiously. D:)

I'm in Act 2 so far. I've barely started it since I'm doing nothing but playing the side and companion quests first. That and I just haven't had the time or interest to really sit down and play through it. LIKE TONIGHT. I OUGHT TO BE PLAYING IT BUT MY SISTER HAS FRIENDS OVER AND THEY TOOK OVER THE CONSOLES FOR THE DAY. (Yes, I am making angry faces at the back of your head, sis. SO HARD.)

My scattered thoughts on it thus far. Mostly related to the romance because haw haw who cares about plot. Spoilers! )

Also, there is a sad amount of good Anders icons. And Merrill. I don't want to go deep into icon communities yet because I'm afraid I'll walk right into spoilers.

...WTF.

Well, there goes my good mood for the day.

NYTimes, the bastion of quality reporting, reported on the gang-rape of an 11 year-old girl in Texas  that's led to charges against 18 high-school boys so far - all well and good so far, right?  Shit like this NEEDS publicity to raise awareness.

Only problem is, they repeated - without refutation or critical commentary - the claims that the girl brought the rape on herself because of the way she was dressed.

Choice Quotes (No cut b/c everyone needs to see this - DEAL.):

“It’s just destroyed our community,” said Sheila Harrison, 48, a hospital worker who says she knows several of the defendants. “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.  As opposed to the victim, who's gonna bounce back lickety-fucking-split, right?

Residents in the neighborhood where the abandoned trailer stands — known as the Quarters — said the victim had been visiting various friends there for months. They said she dressed older than her age, wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s. She would hang out with teenage boys at a playground, some said.  TOTALLY BEGGING FOR IT.

THIS IS RAPE CULTURE, PEOPLE.

Now, what's being said and done in this community is bad enough, but the NY Times should be fucking ashamed of themselves right now.

Here's how to contact NYT: )

I had another insomniac evening/early morning, so I decided to redo this exercise. The last time I did this, it was in 2009 shortly before that nanowrimo. This time, I did it out of boredom.

Basically, you compile two lists before you write a novel: one list for things you believe make a good story/narrative, and another for the things that bore you or the things you simply hate too much to even consider.

I looked at my last lists back from 2009--for some reason, I'm the very first link that shows up on Google when I search "nanowrimo magna carta", even though I forgot I wrote that entry--and I hated the list I've compiled. I won't go into the details as to why these elements work for me unless someone asks, or if I wake up tomorrow and feel inspired to explain myself, but I thought sharing the lists would be fun.

Yes. Physical education is extremely important, especially in today's times where kids can't really play outside like they used to. If a family isn't fortunate enough to pay mind to nutrition in their household, gym classes can provide opportunities for kids to stay in shape and remain healthy. Also, I imagine a lot of kids need to burn their energy someplace; sitting in a classroom all day without activity or recess can't be good for anyone. I believe it's just as awful of an idea to remove gym classes from a school curriculum as it is to remove art classes or music programs. It's a bad idea.

On the other hand, physical education was never a pleasant experience for me. Gym classes always seem to be an excuse for kids to pick on each other, especially if you're playing a game like dodgeball. It got better in high school, but it was so boring. Physical education isn't necessarily going to be a fun class for you if you're not interested in sports, and that seems to be all anyone ever wants to do in those classes. :/

So...yes, I do think it should be mandatory, but I also think schools should make sure gym class is a fun time for everyone.

So, tonight, Dragon Age decided that Alistair and my character were a thing. Seriously. I think I took too long picking someone or I did something right/wrong? All I know is that I literally just finished a companion quest when Alistair was asking Wynne for love advice. UHH, THANKS FOR INFORMING ME OF THIS, GAME, BUT WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?

(This is literally after my sister yelled at me to go for the Slutty Elf Guy. That's his name in this household. Yes, his name is Zevran, but he is forever known as Slutty Elf Guy. We're horrible. And it's already decided that my sister's got dibs on him when it's her turn to play after I beat my game.)

Either way, I let it play out because Alistair won me over with his pretty words. Without spoilers, here's the short version: no regrets on my part...yet. We'll see. I only got done with the Landsmeet so who knows how the rest of the story will play out.

Is it me or is time passing by too fast lately? The things I thought I did just recently...were actually a long time ago, or not as recent as I thought it'd been. (Especially Livejournal comments you guys give me and I ... almost never reply to them. I read them, think, "Mmkay, I'll save that for later when I'm ready to word my thoughts," and two weeks later I'll finally notice it and go "AHH FUCK WHY.") Maybe it's because I haven't actually accomplished anything lately? Or my insomniac sleeping patterns? I don't know, I don't like it. Watch, this is probably in my head and I'll feel better about it a few months from now.

I've been playing a lot of Dragon Age lately. I have one huge (okay, small, but it's a big deal to me) dilemma with this game: Silly, pointless rambling nobody wants to read but I'm going to talk about it anyway. )

That's it for now. It's waaaaay past time for me to go to sleep so off I go.

The story and words are hers, but I do believe that it needs to go viral and that as many people as possible need to get their stories out there. Only by making a noise about this can we make a change in our society.)

There is a move afoot in the nation -driven by the GOP - to repeal the new health care laws, to protect corporate interests, to defend against fear-mongering (and stupid) cries of "socialism!", and to ensure that people are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their heads or getting necessary health care.

This movement is killing people.

Think I'm overstating the fact?

Ask the friends and family of writer/reviewer Melissa Mia Hall, who died of a heart attack last week because she was so terrified of medical bills, she didn't go see a doctor who could have saved her life.

From another writer friend: One person. Not the only one. That could have been me. Yeah, I have access to insurance -- I live in New York City, which is freelancer-friendly, and have access to freelancer advocacy groups. Through them, I can pay over $400/month ($5,760/year) as a single, healthy woman, so that if I go to the hospital I'm not driven to bankruptcy. But a doctor's appointment - a routine physical - can still cost me several hundred dollars each visit. So unless something's terribly wrong? I won't go.

My husband worked for the government for 30 years. We have government employee (retired) insurance. It is the only thing of value he took away from that job. His pension is pitiful. He still works part time. My writing income has diminished drastically. Our combined income is now less than what it was before T retired fifteen years ago. Inflation has diminished it further. In the last 30 days I have racked up over $8000 in medical bills for tests and the beginning of treatment. Our co-pay is 20% after the deductible. And there is more to come. Our savings are already gone. I have the gold standard of insurance and I still can't pay all the medical bills.

Another friend lost her insurance when her husband lost his job. She couldn't afford medication and ended up bed ridden for three months at the end of over a year of no job and therefore no insurance until he found work again.

It's our responsibility. All of us, together. As a nation.

EtA: Nobody is trying to put insurance companies out of business. They will always be able to offer a better plan for a premium. We simply want to ensure that every citizen - from infant to senior citizen - doesn't have to choose between medical care, and keeping a roof over their heads, or having enough to eat.

We're trying to get this to go viral. Pass it along.
