re: Sailor Moon & Chibiusa's existence
Jan. 7th, 2010 11:55 pmBecause I was thinking about it after I answered a question
beyondheroism__ asked me, here are some thoughts.
I'm not sure if I like the existence of Chibiusa or the fact that the main cast are personally aware of their future. Chibiusa as a character is okay, but really, I'd prefer knowing little to nothing about Mamoru and Usagi's future, and I didn't want them to know either.
I'm an older fan now, and to me it's difficult to explore possible fanon ships because Chibiusa is there and the future is there, and Mamoru and Usagi HAVE to be together to ensure both of those things are safe. For example, I really like Usagi/Seiya, Usagi/Rei and Mamoru/Setsuna, but it's impossible to explore those ships and make sense out of them when there's a future!child wandering around to remind Mamoru and Usagi that she'll be gone forever if they screw up.
Also, the indicated reason why they have to know their future sort-of bothers me. Yeah, they had to rescue from the future, but there was also these implications that they should remain together because of their possible future. Mamoru and Usagi should be together because they love each other as they always were, not because they're aware of their child/children's existence.
(Although I don't think I really like the fact that Chibiusa exists anymore, my heart still breaks when she disappears in Usagi's arms in the anime. It makes me cry, dammit.
I think all of this is also partly the reason why Disney's Meet The Robinsons kinda bugs me. It's cute, but I didn't want the kid to know his future! I don't want him to only be with his future wife because he has a son to worry about. It just ruins the point of life and its uncertainties, at least for me.)
So! Discuss, if you want, but there you go. That's how I feel.
