Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandomspecific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.

Because I'm bored and I haven't really updated with the memes in awhile. Took this from [livejournal.com profile] cheriestar.

I see a Hey Arnold icon, so how did you feel about Arnold/Helga in canon? Do you wish they'd gotten more development?

Is there a certain fic trope or cliche you really hate?

I loved Arnold/Helga in canon when we got to see them truly working off each other, in both good and bad ways, but I really wish Nickelodeon wouldn't have cheated them out of their closure. The show and movie was canceled too soon; they were going to work on the Jungle Movie in which Arnold went to search for his parents with his class, and supposedly Arnold and Helga were going to get together. In season five, we were starting to see hints that Arnold was starting to care for Helga, or that he was well aware of her feelings for him, but it never got the proper development it should've gotten. Sure, we can use our imaginations and assume they got together eventually, but it sucks that we couldn't actually see it.

Also, since this is tied in with Arnold/Helga, I was tired of the Helga/Arnold/Lila triangle very quickly, especially in late season four and five. I wish they dropped that. Not because I hated Lila (which I didn't), but I just hated how Arnold wouldn't take the hint--no matter how bluntly Lila said that she didn't like him the same way he liked her--and realize that they had nothing in common to begin with. And Helga really shouldn't have to feel that she needed to prove to Arnold that she could be just as appealing as Lila.

Oh, there's so many tropes I hate. Hope you don't mind I make a list and spam this comment space.

1. I'm sure you're aware of this already since I talked about it a few days back, but I really hate any fictional relationship which includes the douchebag boyfriend and the extremely passive girlfriend, especially if the author didn't mean for it to look as dysfunctional as it sounds; like, it's set up to be really romantic when, in truth, it isn't. I relate a little too closely to passive, shy girls and I hate to see them getting walked all over by their own boyfriends, who seem to believe they need to control their girlfriends rather than letting them live their own lives. It's a huge turn off for me from any series, because I'd prefer seeing these girls get a boy who genuinely cares for them and isn't out to take advantage of her naive nature. I like slap-slap-kiss relationships, but I want to see the girl bite back just as hard as the boy.

2. I don't like female characters that are purposely set up for pure Fanservice alone without bringing anything to the narrative. The character can be attractive and eye candy. Some fanservice is okay with me as long as the character doesn't just exist for the male gaze. :\

3. Lastly, I hate it when a character is set up to be hated on for ... no apparent reason, other than the fact that they're supposedly annoying without any examples proving she or he (it's usually a female character) has done something to deserve it. It doesn't make me laugh nor does it make me like the cast that's picking on the character. It just makes me feel sorry for them.

I think that's it. I'm sure there's more, but those three get on my nerves the most lately. And most of them seem to be related to how the female characters are treated. SURPRISE SURPRISE.

As for just pure, silly cliches, I kinda get annoyed with HORNY NOSEBLEEDS and GUYS SPITTING UP BLOOD whenever he's just punched in the gut. You can't bounce back from internal bleeding like that in real life! Gawd.

1. Hot Gimmick/pick almost any random shoujo manga syndrome. HDU IT'S A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY

2.Agreed, it gets annoying when a fanservice character's body is the butt of the joke all the time.

3. I know what you mean but I can't think of one right now. Do you have an example?

That's probably why I don't like the majority of anime fight scenes. It's always the same reactions being played over and over.

1. IT IS SO GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL. HOW CAN WE NOT RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTY OF ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS.

3. Um, one of the biggest examples is Meg from Family Guy. Admittedly it's a little expected, since she's whiny and self-absorbed, but the way the entire cast dumps all over her is really discouraging, especially since she's an insecure teenager. (Part of the reason why I stopped watching it. That and it just wasn't funny anymore.) There's other shows too, but I can't remember at the moment either.

IT IS. I always count how many times a guy ends up spitting up blood, and it astounds me that none of them are dead by the time it's over. And it isn't a little blood like you get from getting punched in the mouth; it's critical "oh my god there goes 1 pint" bleeding.

Annnnd like the dummy I am, I just realized you asked me about fic tropes, and not just general tropes. That's a little embarrassing on my part since it took me two days to realize it. D: Sorry about that.

To be honest, I don't have a lot of fic tropes I hate, except I really really hate high school AUs that have extremely generic plots.

haha I didn't even realise we had gone off-topic to general tropes.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of high school AU's either because it's usually projection on the author's part and high school just isn't that interesting to me. I prefer college or university AUs but those are pretty rare for some reason.
