sleepyscribbles, I've mentioned it on Tumblr, and now I post about the monstrosity that is this anime. (Also, we mention characters named Odin and Alice, who are our original characters. Long story short: Odin was a womanizing and inconsiderate jerk of mine who makes babies cry at the sight of him, and Alice was unfortunate enough to date him for a short while.)
Me (11:08:42 PM): Itazura Na Kiss
Me (11:08:43 PM): Basically,
Me (11:09:11 PM): there's this girl who isn't very smart but very high-spirited, who's crushing on this cold-hearted jerk who looks down on her because she isn't in the same class as him.
Me (11:09:34 PM): She tries to confess her love to him through a form of a love letter, and he just rejects her without even reading the letter.
Me (11:10:09 PM): Through some random coincidences and situations that involve her house falling down, she ends up living with her father's best friend, who conveniently enough is the father of the boy she's crushing on.
Me (11:10:26 PM): Like, I watched the first four episodes just because I was curious after seeing some scene on YouTube, and it was ... really really terrible.
Me (11:11:06 PM): She never got to tell him off for being a jerk to her even though e deserved it, because the show was obsesed with showing HOW NICE OF A GUY HE REALLY REALLY IS UNDERNEATH, and whenever she tried to stand up to him, the scene was almost always interrupted with lol hilarity from the supporting characters.
Me (11:11:24 PM): And whenever she tried to stand up to him and make the message stick, he'd end up proving her wrong or doing something else that was really horrendous.
Me (11:11:46 PM): One scene in particular, he does read her love letter. Only to read it out loud to her. In front of their families. To mock her.
Me (11:12:00 PM): ...yet the scene still sets him up as SOME GUY WHO IS SECRETLY NICE ON THE INSIDE.

Me (11:12:07 PM): He is like, Odin if he had brains.
Me (11:12:55 PM): I ended up hate watching the first four and then I dropped it like a bad habit.
Me (11:13:21 PM): CONCLUSION: research a show's plot before you even watch it. Yes.

Me (11:15:10 PM): But it's okay because he actually secretly loved her and he's a really nice guy!

BFF (11:15:32 PM): ...yeah no.
Me (11:15:52 PM): Seriously, he even helps her study for this exam so she can end up on some board with the Top 50 students in the school with him.
Me (11:16:07 PM): She passes the exam, ends up at #50, but she still did it and proved to him that she really isn't as dumb as he thinks she was.
Me (11:16:10 PM): ... next episode?
Me (11:16:29 PM): It's revealed she failed the next exam so she isn't on the b oard anymore. It's revealed for a few seconds at the beginning if the episode.

Me (11:16:34 PM): WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE POINT THEN?
BFF (11:16:41 PM): ...
Me (11:16:48 PM): Was it just to show HOW NICE he was and HOW HE ACTUALLY BELIEVED IN HER and all that shit

The coherent version: Based on the four episodes I've watched (never agaaaaain), Itazura Na Kiss is awful. The male lead Naoki Irie doesn't deserve the female lead Kotoko because she's too nice for him, and I don't understand how anyone expected an audience to empathize with him. And she certainly didn't deserve some guy who didn't respect her and I was sorry to hear that she ended up marrying him. Ugh.
Also, the supporting cast is boring and lackluster, in both personality and character design, so if you hate the leads and you hope to at least find a minor character to love like I'd do, then you're fucked. It's specifically set up so you have no choice but to watch the show for the lead characters.
MAN, it's rare for an anime series to piss me off. It only took four episodes! It's not as bad as Hot Gimmick, but it's up there. I'm going to heal myself with School Rumble because so far that show's been adorable and hilarious.

Date: 2010-07-18 10:21 pm (UTC)Every time I hear anything about Hot Gimmick, I just physically retch. It's an incredibly demeaning and offensive series; it stands as a textbook example of an abusive relationship more than anything, except it ends with a happily ever after than the actual truth.
I've never paid attention to the art so I took another look and...yeah, I can't unsee it now. THEIR HAAAANDS.
